'He's now an indoor only cat who is living his best life': One year after showing up skinny and hungry, Smokey's transformation is incredible

Smokey showed up looking for food, but he ended up finding a family.

Cat lovers on Reddit's r/cats subreddit often talk about the cats that seem to choose their humans, and Smokey's story fits that description perfectly. About a year ago, a family opened their front door and found a young cat sitting casually on a deck chair. When they greeted him, he answered with a raspy meow that sounded like he'd been smoking for years. It was a small moment that ended up changing all of their lives.

At first, they assumed Smokey belonged to someone nearby. He was incredibly friendly from the start, but they didn't want to accidentally take in a cat that already had a home. As they spent more time with him, however, they noticed he was far too skinny. He was dirty, dehydrated, and covered in fleas. After getting some food and water, he wandered off, leaving them disappointed and wondering if they'd ever see him again.

The answer came later that night. When the family returned home, Smokey was waiting for them on the porch. The next day they took him to be scanned for a microchip, but none was found. Soon after, he was neutered, microchipped, and officially welcomed into the family.

Looking back, they believe Smokey may have been abandoned when someone moved out of a nearby apartment complex. Whatever his past was, life is very different now. The once-skinny stray who struggled with overgrooming has grown into a happy, healthy indoor cat. What started with a raspy meow on a deck chair turned into the kind of rescue story every cat lover hopes for.

There's something special about the bond between a rescue cat and the person who gave them a second chance. Maybe it's because they seem to know who helped them when they needed it most. Smokey showed up looking for food and a safe place to rest, and he found someone willing to give him both. A year later, he's healthy, happy, and loved. That's the kind of connection that goes far beyond treats and food bowls.

The CDS really nailed this one. Smokey picked the right porch, and his future family couldn't ignore a skinny, hungry cat sitting on their deck chair asking for help. It's easy to see why they fell for him so quickly. A year later, he's healthy, happy, and living the good life indoors. Not bad for a cat who just showed up one day and decided, "Yep, this is my house now."

Based on the scientific measurement system commonly used by cat owners, Smokey appears to be approximately two TV remotes long. That's a very respectable size for a cat and puts him well above the average loaf of bread but still below the length of a fully stretched cat occupying an entire couch. Of course, all measurements become invalid the moment he stretches out for a nap, at which point he'll somehow expand to roughly six remotes and claim every available inch of space.
